Jaguar XK120: How Britain Built the World’s Fastest Production Car

The Jaguar XK120 transformed Jaguar’s international reputation almost overnight.
Unveiled in 1948, the sleek British sports car was initially intended in relatively limited numbers as a showcase for Jaguar’s new XK engine. Demand was so strong that the concept became a genuine production model.
Its 3.4-liter inline-six used twin overhead camshafts, producing approximately 160 bhp in early road specification. Jaguar’s own heritage records describe a standard XK120 reaching about 126 mph at Jabbeke in Belgium, with an even higher speed recorded after aerodynamic changes.
Those figures explain its name: “120” referred to the extraordinary speed Jaguar expected from the new sports car.
The earliest cars used aluminum bodywork, but strong demand led Jaguar to introduce steel-bodied production versions.
Why was the XK120 so important?
Because Jaguar combined exotic-car performance and dramatic styling at a price that made the car accessible to a much larger audience than many bespoke European sports cars.
The XK120 also opened doors in the crucial American market and became the foundation for a family of XK sports cars.
It was not merely a beautiful post-war automobile. It helped establish the engineering and styling philosophy that would eventually lead to some of Jaguar’s greatest road and racing cars.
